Priority Ponds Project
Brewster's landscape is adorned with a necklace of
blue jewels, the sparkling freshwater ponds that
are precious habitats for fish, plants and animals
and so lovely to look at. But they threatened by
increasing development of the surrounding upland
into roads and subdivisions. Water quality deteriorates
and wildlife suffers.
In 2003, The Compact of Cape Cod Conservation Trusts
(a service bureau for local land trusts on Cape Cod
including the Brewster Conservation Trust) conducted
a computer mapping analysis of 3,000 land parcels around
the Cape’s freshwater ponds. More than 80 ponds
were considered priority ponds -- ponds with pondshore
parcels that have a high priority for conservation
in order to protect water quality and wildlife habitat.
Brewster has 12 priority ponds, a very high number
for the Cape Cod region.
The goal of BCT’s Priority Ponds Project is to
contact owners of these priority parcels and provide
information about how they may help protect the wildlife
and water quality of their ponds. BCT offers a variety
of land conservation options to suit the goals of each
owner.
